We Built a Calculator That Shows Exactly How Much Manual Work Costs You
Every ROI calculator we tried used American salary inputs — so the number was useless here. We built one that prices manual work in naira. Here's why that one detail changes the entire decision.
We Built a Calculator That Shows Exactly How Much Manual Work Costs You
Most businesses don’t have an AI problem. They have a math problem they’ve never actually done.
We kept hearing the same thing in discovery calls: “We know we should automate some of this, but we don’t know where to start, and honestly we don’t know if it’s worth it.”
Fair. So we went looking for a calculator. There are dozens of automation ROI calculators online, and we found the problem in about four minutes.
The Problem With Every ROI Calculator We Tried
They all ask you the same question: what’s your average hourly labor cost?
And they all default to something like $45/hour. Some let you change it. Most people don’t.
Then the calculator runs the math and tells you automation pays back in 11 months.
Here’s why that number is worse than useless for a business in Lagos or Abuja. If your admin staff cost ₦180,000 a month and works 160 hours, your real loaded hourly cost is around ₦1,125 — not $45. The same process, priced with the wrong wage input, produces a payback period that’s off by a factor of roughly 40.
A business owner types in their real hours, sees a payback window that looks like 18 months, closes the tab, and keeps doing it manually. Not because automation is a bad investment for them — but because the tool lied to them with someone else’s salary.
We couldn’t find a calculator that did this properly for the Nigerian market. So we built one.
What the Ops Drain Calculator Actually Does
It starts where every honest audit should: with your processes, priced in naira.
You tell it what your team does manually — check-in, scheduling, data entry, reconciliation, invoicing, reporting. How many people touch it, how long each one takes, how often.
Then it does three things:
- Prices the drain — the annual cost of the manual work, using a Nigerian hourly rate you can actually verify.
- Prices the fix — the automation build cost plus its monthly run cost.
- Returns the payback period in days — not a vague “efficiency gains” claim.
The default hourly rate is ₦6,500, and there’s a currency toggle if you’re pricing a dollar-facing operation. We set the Nigerian number as the default deliberately, because the default is what most people leave alone — and that’s exactly where every other calculator gets it wrong.
A real example. Three people doing manual check-in, twenty minutes each, daily. That’s 60 minutes a day of staff time. At ₦6,500/hour, it’s about ₦1.6M a year in staff hours for a process that a QR check-in system handles in 0.4 seconds per attendee. Against a build cost that lands well under that, the payback is measured in days, not quarters.
That’s the entire point. Not “automation is the future.” Just: here is the leak, here is what closing it costs, here is when it pays for itself.
What We Learned Building It
Everyone underestimates the small stuff. No single manual task looks expensive. Twenty minutes a day is nothing. The calculator’s job is to make people add them up — and it’s the sum that’s usually a full salary.
The 90-day line is a genuinely useful filter. When we scoped our first automation build, we held ourselves to one rule: if it doesn’t pay for itself inside 90 days, we don’t recommend it. It forces honest sequencing. Most businesses shouldn’t start with the impressive platform — they should start with the repetitive process that drains the most.
Real production systems make the claim credible. We’re not theorizing. We run Veripasshub for event check-in — 50,000+ verified records, 0.4-second response, and zero gate staff. We built Gym House to run 500+ gym members with no full-time admin — billing, check-in, and audit logs fully automated. Those aren’t pitch decks. They’re running.
Run Your Own Numbers
The calculator is free, needs no email address, and takes about thirty seconds.
If the number surprises you, that’s the point. It surprises almost everyone — and it’s usually the first time anyone’s actually done the math.
